Common questions

What's a reasonable late fee to charge?

Most freelancers and small businesses charge 1-2% per month, or a flat $25-$50 fee, or both. Make sure it's stated on the invoice in advance.

Are late fees legal?

Yes, if they are agreed in the contract or on the invoice before the work started. Some countries cap the maximum interest rate — check your local rules.

Should I add late fees to every invoice or just chase overdue ones?

Add the policy line to every invoice ('2% per month on overdue amounts'). Only apply it after the due date passes. Most clients pay faster when the policy is visible.
