What's the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a % of the selling price. Markup is profit as a % of the cost. Same profit, different denominator.
What's a good profit margin?
Depends on industry. Software 60-80%. Retail 30-50%. Groceries 2-5%. Freelance services 40-70% after overhead.
How do I calculate the price to hit a target margin?
Price = Cost / (1 − Margin). For 40% margin on $60 cost: 60 / 0.6 = $100.
